ICEBERG SYMPHONY/ AISBERGAS for symphony orchestra (2000)
PROGRAMME NOTE:
„Aisbergas“ simfoniniam orkestrui (2000)
Kūrinio pavadinimas turi simbolinę bei perkeltinę prasmę. Bekraščiame vandenyne boluojantis ledkalnis visų pirma man asocijuojasi su mistika – nes tai, ką mes matome (aisbergo viršūnę), tėra tik mažoji dalis to, kas slypi giliai po vandeniu…
Raminta Šerkšnytė
Iceberg Symphony for symphony orchestra (2000)
It was the composer’s Master’s diploma work, the image of which has developed in her mind since the beginning of her studies. It is also the first work in the series of Mountain trilogy. Form-wise, it is based on the alternation of contrasting sections and a sort of leitmotif system. Certain motifs reoccur in a different harmonic context each time. The image of a brilliant white crown of an iceberg, plunging into a boundless ocean, encircled by underwater currents was that idea which often flashed across the composer’s mind. She ‘paints’ this image by using multilayered textures, sparkling colours of instruments in their variety and interchange of dynamic spaces and perspectives. Naturally crystallising neo-tonal ‘icebergs’ of triads and seventh chords, the mutual attraction and repulsion between the major and the minor harmonies move the orchestral whirlpools and lead to a massive climax in the recapitulation, in which the scene suddenly becomes transparent enough to see what has been hidden ‘under water’…
